No doubt, that figure has drastically increased since – so much so that some studies are now claiming that on average, 1 out of 8 women and 1 in 870 men in the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

A foolproof cure is still not available and the best we can do to keep ourselves at a safe distance from breast cancer is to take precautionary measures and breast cancer treatment that may prove to be deterrent to the disease. Fortunately, a lot of studies are being conducted on the possible breast cancer treatment – studies that definitely help spread awareness amongst the masses while educating women about healthy lifestyle choices they ought to take.
One such recent study claim that eating a high-fiber diet as a teenager, including loads of fruits and vegetables, may help women as breast cancer treatment.
The Harvard study that included an extensive survey of 90,000 women found that women who reported consuming a high amount of fiber during their adolescent and teenage years had far less chance of suffering from breast cancer before menopause.
The study divided the women into two groups. One group included all women who consumed at least 28 grams of fibers a day while the second included those who consumed less than 15 grams a day.
“The results of this study emphasize the role of an early life high-fiber diet on prevention of breast cancer in later life. High consumption of foods rich in fiber such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains in early life may help to reduce breast cancer incidence,” lead author of the study, Maryam Farvid, a visiting scientist at Harvard, told CBS News.
The study also showed that depending on their daily intake of fibers, the risk of breast cancer reduced by up to 19% overall, and up to 25% before menopause.
In terms of quantity, according to the study, eating additional 10 grams of fruits and vegetables with high fiber content daily was highly recommended.
Taking High Fibrous Diet
The researchers further added that those who consume at least 25 grams to 30 grams fiber daily could face a far lower chance (up to 30% less) of developing the disease. Based on the findings of the study, recommended high-fiber foods include: apples, artichokes, broccoli, beans, bran flakes, brown rice, green peas, pears, raspberries, split peas, lentils, whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread, and oatmeal.
In an accompanying editorial in the journal Pediatrics where the study was originally published, Duke University Medical Center’s Dr. Kimberly Blackwell tried explaining the possible benefits of high-fiber diet. Blackwell mentioned that there are longstanding documented evidence of dietary fibers’ ability to reduce the circulation of estrogen levels by controlling the gut microbiome.
One weakness Blackwell found in the study was that all participants were asked to recall about their adolescent diet when they were in their 30s and 40s. This could have impacted the findings in one way or the other, she believes. Nonetheless, Blackwell still insisted that it is reasonable for pediatricians to promote and encourage high-fiber meals as they might be the simplest and one of the most effective means at our disposal today to protect ourselves from breast cancer.
